Reverend Gustavus Hines, Methodist missionary, was born in Herkimer County, New York on September 6, 1809. In 1839, Hines was appointed a missionary to Oregon and traveled on the ship Lausanne with his wife, Lydia. Initially, Hines was assigned to assist Jason Lee in exploring the Umpqua Valley for a possible mission site. He spent the remainder of his missionary service, however, at the Willamette Mission.
